Common Swim DQs

Freestyle:
There are few DQs in freestyle because the swimmer can swim with any style they want (hence "free-style"), but there are a few:

  • Failure to touch the wall at the turning end of the pool.
  • Pushing off the bottom or pulling on the lane lines.
  • Exiting the pool before swimming the specified distance.

Backstroke:

  • Swimmer must stay on back entire race – can’t be on chest at any time except during a flip turn. Swimmers who turn onto their chest at the finish will be DQ'ed.
  • Backstroke flip turns are a common DQ: Once the swimmer rolls onto the chest, he/she may only take one stroke and must not have a delay in initiating that arm pull or the turn once the arm pull is compete.

Breaststroke:

  • Swimmer must touch the turn wall and finish wall with two hands simultaneously.
  • Kick must be a symmetrical “frog kick” with toes turned out during propulsive part of kick. Scissors kick, flutter kick, or butterfly kick results in a DQ.
  • More than one stroke underwater with arms fully extended at start or turn.
  • Arm strokes past hips except on first stroke after start or turn.
  • Head didn't break surface by conclusion of second arm pull underwater after a start or turn.

Butterfly:

  • Swimmer must touch the turn wall and finish wall with two hands
  • Non-simultaneous leg movement during kicks
  • Arms don't break water surface during recovery
  • Non-simultaneous arm movement during recovery

False Start:

  • Once a swimmer takes a stationary position on the “take your marks” command, he/she must remain still until the starting horn sounds. Any swimmer initiating a start before the signal may be DQ'ed. If the starting signal has been given before the DQ is declared, the swimmer(s) will be DQ'ed after the race. If a false start infraction happens and the race does NOT start, then under current NVSL Rules, the swimmer will be DQ'ed and the time will not count, but the swimmer will be allowed to swim the event.

Relay False Start:

  • A swimmer’s toes leave the wall before the incoming swimmer touches the wall. If this happens, the entire relay is DQ'ed and the time does not count.
