Coach Carly returns for her second season as head coach after capping off a perfect 5-0 season in 2018! Carly has a wealth of experience as a swimmer and coach, and we’re excited to have her leading our team! Carly grew up swimming in the NVSL for Arlington Forest and also did club swimming with the Arlington Aquatic Club. She was a varsity swimmer and Team Captain at Washington-Lee High School and went on to compete at the NCAA D-1 level for Radford University. Carly graduated from Radford in 2010 with a degree in social work.
During her college years, Carly served as an Assistant Coach at two NVSL pools (Dominion Hills and Donaldson Run). She later became an NVSL head coach at Village West and also coached club swimming with Sea Devils Swimming. Carly has worked as a professional social worker for Fairfax and Arlington Counties in the past. She and her husband, Brian, a K-9 officer with the Arlington County Police Dept., are the parents of two young daughters, Harper and Bailey.
Coach Valen is one of the longest-tenured coaches in OKM history -- we welcome her back for her SIXTH summer as an OKM coach! This will be Valen's third year as an Asst. Coach after serving three years as a Junior Coach. She will also lead the Mini Osprey Program again this summer and previously coached OKM Winter Swim for three years.
As a swimmer, Valen competed for OKM 2013-17, did club swimming with SDS and FISH for many years, and was a four-year member of the Lake Braddock varsity team. She is now completing her sophomore year at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and we are very grateful to have her coaching again!
OKM welcomes Coach Janey for her first season as an NVSL Asst. Coach! Janey is truly an NVSL "lifer" and simply loves NVSL swimming! She swam for Fairfax Station for more than *15 years* and served as a Junior Coach, Minis Coach and Winter Swim Coach for four years. Janey was a four-year member of the Robinson varsity swim team, which won a Virginia State Title in 2016, and swam club for Machine Aquatics for many years. Janey is finishing her freshman year at Xavier University and is excited to kick off her coaching career at OKM!
Dave has been a member of OKM since 2011 and part of NVSL swimming since 1982. He was a swimmer and a head coach during a 17-year span at Walden Glen Pool in Springfield, and he swam through college at the University of Miami (FL). When his kids started swimming, he dove back into the sport as a parent volunteer. He became the volunteer head coach of the OKM Winter Swim Program in 2014 and became the Competitive Activities Director for the OKM Board in 2015. He continues to coach OKM Winter Swim and serve on the OKM Board, and he became Swim Team Rep in 2018.
Dave remains active as a swimmer by competing in U.S. Masters Swimming competitions and local open water races like the Chesapeake Bay Swim. Dave and his wife Elizabeth have five children (with one more coming soon!), and they currently have four swimmers on the OKM Team. Dave is passionate about swimming and wants to provide a positive introduction to the sport to the OKM community. When he’s not at the pool, Dave works as in-house litigation attorney for Marriott International in Bethesda, MD.
Liz started participating in the NVSL in the 1980s for both Orange Hunt and our very own OKM! She became the Asst. Team Rep and Minis Rep in 2018 and has helped organize and guide the biggest Mini Ospreys Program in OKM history! Liz and her husband Justin have two children, who are both on the OKM team. Liz recently left a career as a corporate attorney to become a High School English Teacher, and she currently teaches at Falls Church High School.
